Here is a 1980 Bally Flash Gordon playfield.  This was a damaged NOS playfield with some major issues and water damage on the lower bottom of the playfield.   It also had some type of aftermarket thick lacquer coating that had to be removed.   The plywood was falling apart and it had black mold on it.  It also had extreme cracking in the original lacquer finish.  This playfield set was a mess.  No stickers or overlays were used in this restoration.
