SPIRIT (Gottlieb)

Here is a 1982 Gottlieb Spirit playfield set.  This playfield became a ‘nightmare’ restoration, which is typical of Spirit playfields.  It had adhesion issues with the original paint and wood surface.  This happens usually if the playfield, at some point in it’s past, was subjected to extreme temperature changes/moisture issues.  Unlike other Gottlieb playfields from this time period, most Spirit games were shipped outside of the USA when they were new in 1982.  When these games are shipped back into the USA (re-imported), they are usually shipped in shipping containers and are exposed to extreme heat/cold/moisture conditions. Wood and paint expand and contract differently when exposed to either very hot or cold temperatures.  This causes bonding issues and the original silk screen (paint) begins to lift from the base wood surface.  When this happens our clear coat will stick to the original paint but the original paint will continue to shrink and bubble/lift from the wood.   No stickers, overlays or decals were used in this restoration.  Everything was either airbrushed or painted.

On past Spirit playfield restorations we had an outside artist using a Steve Charland source since they claim they were the Spirit playfield expert.  We stopped using this expert artist since we felt we could do a better job.  This is the only Spirit playfield set that HSA personally restored.
