FUNHOUSE - PROTO #2
FUNHOUSE - PROTO #2
Here is a PROTOTYPE Funhouse playfield. This Funhouse is one of the approx 15 prototype games that Williams made. The prototypes had a different playfield. The playfield has all 5 “STEPS” targets. The production games do not have the extra “S” insert/target. This was a very basic restoration because I wanted to keep as much of the original artwork as possible. This playfield was stamped “Diamond Plate” but it was never Diamond Plated since Williams was in a hurry to build the proto games. The lack of clear coating from the factory explains the high wear you see.
Most of the Funhouse prototype games had a Sun Process made playfield in them (approx 10). They are all stamped with the ‘Diamond Plate’ logo. There are a few (approx 5) Funhouse prototype games with the Linc Smith playfield in them. They are stamped ‘LS Hardcoat’. All 15 of the prototype Funhouse pins have the STEPS (5-target) playfields. The sample (games made after the prototypes but before the production games) Funhouse games (approx 200) have a mixture of the Sun Process and the Linc Smith playfields BUT they are only the STEP playfields without the 5th target hole. Williams tried a few different types of clear coating and found the ‘Diamond Plate’ ones to hold up better than the ‘LS Hardcoat’ ones. Some of the Funhouse protos actually have all five targets installed but Williams pulled the “P” target out after Mark Ritchie felt it blocked the flow during testing. The protos that had the “P” target removed have a wood plug installed in the target hole. Most of the proto FH games have P3 software installed.
